There might be nothing worse. I have been visiting the blogs of Mark Cuban, Paul Graham, Packy McCormick, Andrew Wilkinson, Inevitability Research, DoomBerg and many others. Everyone seems to lurch at the beginning, but these seem like exceptionally good examples to take inspiration from.
I hope for this blog to act as a tool for my own edification and writing improvement, as well as a place to gather my thoughts. I also hope that it invites objections to my thinking that will help me, well, think "better". Lastly, I aim to have these blogs be a public demarcation for myself on the change in my thinking over time.
When you begin a blog in your head, as one does, you can always come up with good ideas to discuss in the public sphere. You have witty takes on current events, you’re pretty sure about the direction, and you have an idea of what GIFs will go where.
Once you start writing, you find yourself wondering if the divider line should go above or below the intro. I’m sure there will be a learning curve to this as with anything, but after reading multiple times about the extensive benefits of public writing, it seems the best way to start (as with anything) is to start.
I have a hunch that writing in public will not only help advance my pedagogy (if you can explain a subject simply, you probably have a good grasp of it) but also help to shape my own opinions in a way that is more concrete.
Lastly, and somewhat selfishly, I believe it will work as a virtual accountabilibuddy. Who knows what I might commit to on here that I can then flog myself for giving up on weeks or days later.
Staying true to my oh-so-bold push for a bias to action, I've written, edited, and posted this all tonight, on 12/11/2023. Onwards and upwards. I’m curious when I’ll have the gumption to invite others to read this publicly or post it on socials.
I have no real plans for a set length, format, or style. I may come on here and write a long-form investigation into something I’m interested in. I may write a quick life update. I may plug something I’m working on. The goal is to remain as open as possible in the beginning. I am sure I will look back on all of these and cringe intensely. In a way, I already am. Believe that may be a good sign to continue onward.
I look forward to seeing what types of interaction this brings from the far reaches of the internet, a place often regarded for its friendly and welcoming nature. If you would like to reach out, I can be found at nm@redhill-co.com or contact@redhill-co.com, also @cannedfanatic on Twitter.
