Nic Mauro
"Take a simple idea and take it seriously."

Bio

Hi there, I'm Nic Mauro. Nic to friends. Nicolas to my mother. Mauro to other friends.

And no, I'm not that Nick Mauro, though I do currently live in NYC as well. I should brush up on my trumpet skills before challenging him. I should have made this site years ago to rank higher than him, but we prevail.

I'm an avid learner, skier, and general appreciator of the outdoors. I'm fascinated by technology, networks, and investing. I'm currently on a Kurt Vonnegut kick. Fiction can be hard for me to get into, but when I find an author I like, I tend to go deep.

Experience

I've worked at a large traditional financial firm, Neuberger Berman; at a technology startup run by Gary Vaynerchuk; and, for the last four years, I've been an entrepreneur and investor. I studied at Trinity College (B.A.) and earned an M.S. in Finance from Georgetown University.

What I'm Building & Backing

Red Hill & Co.

I invest in traditional cash-flow businesses at redhill-co.com, which I like to call my "fortress of solitude."

Red Lab LLC

Where I make riskier, more interesting bets. The latest project: Virlo, a platform for short-form trend intelligence and creator tooling.

Personal Angel Investing

I occasionally back teams and projects that I believe have asymmetric upside.

Writing

I have a not-so-well-maintained Substack here: substack.com/@cannedfanatic. The writing fell off last October, right around when I started Virlo. At that time I picked up writing because I had too much time on my hands, I've solved that, but at what cost (cry emoji). Jokes aside, I thoroughly enjoy being busy and often find ways to fill my time to a fault. It's something I'm constantly working on. I'll likely migrate those posts here eventually.
